Erbium laser treatments are ideal for the improvement of wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage and brown spots. While this treatment provides a more youthful appearance it usually requires a week of down time.
How does the Erbium laser work?
By using light energy, the Erbium laser heats the skin and removes the upper most layers. By removing the upper most layers it takes with it brown spots and benign and precancerous bumps/growths. During the healing process new collagen is generated to fill out scars, acne scars and smooth the skin for a more smooth, youthful appearance.
Does it hurt?
With the use of a potent topical anesthetic the Erbium laser treatment is well tolerated. Usually up to the first hour after treatment it feels like a bad sunburn. After which it may feel sore. Tylenol, Motrin or Asprin can be used to alleviate any remaining discomfort.
Why the downtime and what are the benefits?
The downtime allows for the peeling of the upper most layers of the skin just as if you had a peeling sunburn. This is usually complete in four days. The redness that remains gradually fades and can be covered with makeup. Despite the downtime, the benefits are that you require fewer laser treatments to obtain your goal of smoother, younger looking skin.
